Survivalist Review at a Glance
Survivalist is a great survival game with a great timeline. You start off as Joe Wheeler, a man trying to survive in his bunker for about a year. He gets a distress call and went out to check it out. Turns out an infection spread and now most of the people are zombies.
The Survivalist gameplay is a very satisfying blend of RPG and strategy (I found it somewhat reminiscent to the Jagged Alliance series). But in this game, the world is much more open-ended and realistic. For example, it seems as though it is theoretically possible to recruit almost any NPC to join you by making certain decisions and using certain items.
After the initial, classic-RPG small-group portion of the game, you also start to build your own town, complete with shacks, outhouses, defenses, and corn. The balance of finding items to survive early on and eventually having to make your own is very well done. As you start to manage a larger group of survivors you can also make use of automated commands such as “collect materials”, “farm” or “guard” that give portions of the game a sort of apocalyptic Sims feel.
