Mutazione is a beautiful point & click style adventure with an interesting story and a colorful bunch of characters. A phenomenal narrative experience, a playable work of art.
The game entirely centres around the player wandering around town over and over, talking to all the different characters as they go about their days. Everything is very interconnected and real, between the social dynamics the community has to all their backstories and developing present stories. They all have unique, well crafted and exceptionally well scripted personalities; often displaying an overly real level of depth and consistency in their behaviours. Meanwhile there is an overarching plot, although it is essentially in the background for much of the story, slowly unfolding at a very gradual and tempered pace.
Great music and art, the world is lush and colourful. The environments never really get to feeling dull while wandering around time and time again, there’s a wonderful sense of thoughtful calm to the atmosphere as a whole. The main forms of actual gameplay are primarily limited to collecting seeds and growing the gardens, which helps add an extra dynamic to the game without particularly infringing on the narrative.
Consequently however the game is relatively repetitive in that it requires the player to constantly run through the town over and over to find and interact with all the characters. But that also is what makes it distinctive from other story driven games is the lack of structure, and in general playing the game periodically in small bursts easily remedies any repetition. It’s a very easy experience to set down and come back to multiple times, as the story is very relaxed taking breaks doesn’t particularly break the flow.
The only noticeable issue really with the game is that sometimes the examine prompts are in places that make it unclear as to what you’re supposed to be examining. Also the transitions between the different scenes at the end of the game feel very abrupt and confusing.
Has a solid length for the price, especially if played in moderation this can easily be stretched out for weeks or more from playing just a few tens of minutes each day or few. Which just makes the narrative feel even more immersive by how ingrained the world becomes.

Jussi ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐It just seemed like an incredibly soothing escape that you could take at your own pace!
It’s not action packed or energetic, but it’s colourful, peaceful and interesting.
A gripping journey that kept making me want to play more or all at once but instead I found myself pacing it over the course of three nights, not wanting to rush.
It’s a game where you know you don’t need to speed through it, everything is explored and enjoyed at your own pace.
I’d recommend this to anyone who wants to relax, enjoy some of the most peacefully orchestrated music I’ve heard in a long time (along with some incredible ambience) and enjoys character focused narratives.
Crime Frog⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Mutazione offers some of the realest characters and human drama I have ever experienced in a game. It’s wonderfully written, both funny and sad, evoking loneliness, longing, the give and take of family, and the bitterness and psychological toll of past events that can’t be left in the past.
You can tell these characters are loved by their creators, and each is a joy to talk to; I wanted to walk all around town every day to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. The art, music, and gardening mechanics supplement the writing wonderfully.
I think of this as the game equivalent of a great short story, one I think anyone with an interest in narrative games should experience.
2 Dolla Bill⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐this is one of the best games i have ever played, and even though it’s still january, i suspect it might be my game of the year. what to say about a game that has so much heart in it? in terms of its wonderfully well-plotted and well-paced story, its immaculately funny and poignant dialogue, its music, the visual and especially the sound design of its gardens, and its characterization that makes you intimately for each figure in the village, mutazione stands head, shoulders, and torso above the crowd. it is full of real and genuine emotion. and i’ve almost played a game– or enjoyed any kind of story– with such well executed twists, beats, and reveals– with answers that are always more interesting than the questions, and surprises that are perfectly foreshadowed by the narrative, but still catch you flat-footed every time.
this is all tall praise for a game, but seriously, play it, it’s good. i’m going to dig into garden mode (ha ha) and predict this game is going to be a yearly replay for me, although i need a hot minute right now to process everything in the last act. everyone who hasn’t should give this honest-god-gem a playthrough– right now.
