Filter Forge 11 Review at a Glance
Filter Forge 11 is the release that is planned by the end of the year 2021. The eleventh version features new preview images, a new way to add filter components in the Filter Editor, as well as plugin support for the latest Photoshop 2022 and PaintShop Pro 2022. We’ll add more improvements later, so stay tuned!

Filter Forge is a powerful Photoshop plugin and a stand-alone desktop application for Windows and Mac OS X that allows photographers, web designers, 3D modelers and other computer artists to apply over 5900 ready-to-use visual effects to their images, generate over 6200 of unique procedural textures, and create their own filters. The key features of Filter Forge include a plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop®and other image editors and a free online library of user-created filters to which anyone can contribute.
Filter Forge can produce a wide range of textures and effects which include organic structures, metallic and rocky surfaces, distortions, abstract textures, repeating patterns, color corrections, and more. All filters are adjustable and editable, seamlessly tiled, resolution-independent, and support real-world HDRI lighting. With the Basic edition, users cannot create new and edit existing filters, as well as render normal, bump, diffuse, and other maps and use images larger that 3000×3000 pixels, open and save files in high-precision image formats (OpenEXR and PFM).
Filter Editor is the key feature of Filter Forge, a visual node-based environment allowing users to build custom filters. Filters are assembled by connecting components into a network. Components include familiar operations like blurs, gradients, color adjustments, distortions, and blending, and less familiar such as elevation gradients or Perlin and Worley noises. For end-users, the filter internals are hidden behind a simple set of filter controls, so anyone can benefit from filters without knowing what is inside.
Filter Forge comes in three differently priced editions: Basic, Standard and Professional.
- Basic Edition allows you to download and use an unlimited number of filters but doesn’t let you save filters that you create or edit. You can create new filters from scratch, or open and modify existing filters in the Filter Editor to have a look at their internals and learn how they work, but you cannot save them. All the limitations of Standard edition also apply.
- Standard Edition does not support the 16- and 32-bit modes in the plugin mode, the highest bitmap resolution is limited to 3000×3000 pixels, OpenEXR and PFM image formats are not supported, the number of CPU cores used for rendering is limited to 2; and you cannot render normal, bump and other maps.
- Professional Edition is the fullest edition of Filter Forge – there are no limitations.
Filter Forge 7.0 features full 64-bit support, a rewritten engine that speeds up rendering, adds support for copying and pasting images from and into the program, and updates dozens of components. It also includes support for the latest host applications: Adobe Photoshop CC 2018, Photoshop Elements 2018, Corel Paint Shop Pro 2018, and Paint.NET.
