Hob Review at a Glance
Hob is an absolutely delightful action-adventure puzzle-platformer game from Torchlight II developer Runic Games. It is also very unlike Torchlight, with lots of exploration and puzzles, and a lot less emphasis on combat.
In Hob, the player guides a small creature whose task is to rid the world of some sort of corruption that has been spreading. There is no narration of any kind and the player does not get clear instructions on what to do, only a marker on the map guiding them to their next objective. In that sense, the design is very open-ended and occasionally it may be a little difficult to determine where the player needs to go, but the world is beautiful and intricate and exploring it is a delight. The sound design contributes a lot to this – there is no narration and therefore no voice acting, and music is quite sparsely present as well, but the world is full of various sounds that make it seem more real: the weird noises of Hob’s alien-looking wildlife, the pulsating of electricity-powered machinery, the dripping of water, the metallic noises of contraptions moving etc. The art design is gorgeous as well, masterfully combining nature and industry to create a world full of natural wonders and beautiful scenery powered by machines and contraptions hidden beneath the surface.
A lot of the gameplay revolves around solving environmental puzzles as the player opens up paths, powers up mechanisms and puts into motion complex machinery that moves whole sections of the world. Despite the lack of narration and sparse instructions as to what needs to be done, most puzzles are not too difficult to work out after a bit of tinkering. This is to a large degree the result of excellent game design in which things are made to fit a certain way, which is often revealed in environmental clues. Puzzle solutions are never “random” or arrived at by trying everything until something works; instead, they require careful observation and exploration of the environment to find the correct path and sequence of actions. However, the design of the world as a whole can be confusing on the first playthrough, because a lot of the world opens up in later stages of the game and requires backtracking to earlier areas to find new paths.
As for the combat, it is decent but there is not a lot of it. There are a few different types of enemies, although no real boss battles, and the combat mostly revolves around using a sword, in addition to a few abilities that the player will pick up by upgrading their robo-arm as the game goes on.
Hob is full of clever puzzles and beautiful design, but it does have a few flaws – the most obvious one is the fixed camera, which leads to the the player character occasionally getting obscured by a piece of geometry in the foreground, although not too frequently and never in critical situations. In addition to that, the game’s map is often not very helpful as it doesn’t show pathways, making it unclear which areas can be accessed from which direction. Aside from the next objective, the only things that the map reliably shows are the elevation (brighter areas are higher, darker are lower) and collectibles that the player has seen or been near to, but has not yet picked up.
Aside from a few levers that looked like they can be activated again after they have already been activated, I did not encounter any bugs until after I had finished the game and went back to collect a few collectibles that I had missed when, at one point, the game failed to save my progress. After restarting it, I realized that I had lost about a half an hour worth of playtime. Fortunately this happened after I had finished all the story-related stuff so I didn’t lose much progress, but it was still annoying, especially since Hob doesn’t have the option to save manually.
But these are mostly minor frustrations and I would nevertheless strongly recommend Hob to anyone who likes exploration and puzzles with some combat and platforming: the world is stunning, the art is gorgeous, and the puzzles are engaging and fun.

User & Media Reviews
What are their users saying? Why they loved it?
Hob is an open world metroidvania experience, in a form of an isometric platformer focused on puzzles and exploration. The game also features combat, but as long as you figure out how to tackle each creature type then it’s not complicated, and for the most part it can be avoided if someone chooses to rush past enemies.
Visuals are simply gorgeous. The atmosphere is great. The world is excellently crafted. It’s a sort of bio-mechanic creation, where entire areas can rise up from underground. Figuring stuff out is satisfying. And even though there is not a single word spoken, it gave me a lot to think about. 🙂
I explored everything thoroughly, found all the lore & secret passages, collected every power-up & upgrade, and visited each imaginatively framed vista. Essentially, I enjoyed this game quite substantially and wanted to savor the experience. 🙂
About 5 hours in and I am enthralled by Hob, a beautiful action/exploration/puzzle RPG.
Hob is very different from the previous Runic games (the highly recommended Torchlight games), but has it’s own charm.
Combat is light and not overly challenging, but the main focus here seems to be the puzzle/exploration experience. If you are after a relaxing, take it at your own pace type of game this will fill that niche nicely.
For the headache sufferers this game has no ultra tense moments (so far) and the simple, infrequent combat allows you to play without too much stress and therefore seems suitable for ‘light’ gaming if you are afflicted with a headache. Frequent save points also allow you to pick up/put down at short notice without losing your progress. Recommended.
