Football Manager 2020 Review at a Glance
Football Manager 2020 (FM20) is a football management game developed by Sports Interactive and published by SEGA. It was released on 19 November 2019. In this review, I will briefly cover Football Manager game play, run through the features introduced in FM20 and provide a perspective on the state of the game.
In Football Manager 2020, you, the player, manage a football team through 118 playable leagues. Of this 118, 26 leagues in 14 countries are fully licensed and another 24 teams (national and domestic teams) are licensed. Within the 26 leagues: French Ligue 1 and Ligue 2, German leagues one to three, and English leagues two to four are fully licensed. The English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, and Italian leagues are not; though the Serie A has 18 of 20 licensed teams.
Game Mechanics / Football Manager 2020 Features
Football Manager 2020 incorporates a variety of features and mechanics; including, but not limited to, 2D and 3D football matches, squad training, scouting and transfers, tactics, and financial management. The series also includes a vibrant modding community. In FM20, SI various smaller features such as Club Vision – long-term club progression, the introduction of the Development Centre, transfer negotiation improvements, better integration of backroom staff into your operations, and match engine and graphic upgrades.
I reflect on these main marketed features as small, but solid quality of life features that has a ton of room for improvement in future iterations. Club Vision enables you to consider the long-term aspect of the game, however I found that negotiating a different vision is not user-friendly to do and the Board of Directors offers you little flexibility to amend their vision. Further, Club Vision allows for player negotiations to be interesting by offering players different playing times, but a mechanic that SI should balance because the penalty for not adhering to the playing time is little.
More on FM20’s features: The Development Centre is a cool feature that consolidates your developmental squads into a single UI. This is a neat addition because you can treat your reserve squads similarly, and the staff provides useful contextual advice to you on the progression of players. The changes to backroom staff are visible, i.e. you can select Technical Directors and Loan Managers, but I have yet to see any observations in their role. Lastly, the match engine and graphic upgrades are nice, but the match engine has a lot of room for improvement. If I summarise FM20 by the above features is relevant, yet underwhelming, but nice inclusions to expand on the core game mechanics.
Football Manager 2020 is an ultimately enjoyable game. It benefits from having a strong foundation of team management and football simulation, at the consequence of visible stagnation to new features and post-launch support. FM20 specifically, has some nice features, but I applaud more the many quality of life changes implemented by SI Games. If you are new to Football Manager, I recommend FM20 at full price. If you own FM19, I recommend the game on sale.

Fortesque ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Baldeagle(AG) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐FM20 is amongst the first football manager games I’ve genuinely had time to properly play.
It’s an amazing game which you can pick up v. easily, and despite the high price tag it’s definitely worth it (I bought for £40). The gameplay outside of the game is fun & addicting with a lot of extra detail which keeps you gripped on the game and immersed. This game is amongst my favourites, and while after I while I get bored of other games there’s always something new to challenge for on FM20 and that’s why I never get bored playing it.
100% recommend, great job SI.
YouMadeTheList ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Football Manager 2020 is the best version of Football Manager, hand down, in the same way that Football Manager 2021 will most likely surpass the present iteration of the game. If you are a new player to the franchise, the in game tutorials and menus allow any user to customise and change the many different roles and responsibilities to their liking. Meaning you can slowly ease yourself into the fantastic depth that Football Manger provides for club management. Whilst if you are a returning player, the improvements to aspects like the match engine and the development centre should allow a greater sense of success in the short term while allowing the ability to feel like you have left a legacy with a club in the long term.
Many people may be put off with Football Managers limited licenses in comparison to games like FIFA, with the lack of Premier League licenses, with the exception of Watford, potentially disinteresting a core English audience. Although that being said, the use of the EFL and National League licenses within the game should encourage more lower league management, which in my opinion, provides a much more enjoyable experience than starting your saves at already financially secure and successful teams. Moreover, the complications surrounding the German national team and the Brazilian Leagues can also detract from your experience. However, the ability to install a wide range of graphical and database improvements provided by the fantastic Football Manager community can resolve such issues, these improvements may not be directly supported by Sports Interactive due to legality issues, again surrounding licenses, yet they are perfectly easy to install on the PC version of Football Manager (Simply Google how to install Facepacks, Club Badges, Name Fixes, Entire new divisions, etc).
Football Manager cannot be learnt to play in a day, as much as that may differ certain players, its simply the reality of this game. Football Manager provides a incredible depth to club managements and players will be learning certain mechanics and nuances to the games up to years after playing it. I, myself still learn small things about the game after playing games in the franchise for 4 years now. Yet, If you are willing to brave the seemingly steep learning curve at first glance and learn the core mechanics to this game, I strongly believe you will find yourself hooked into crafting your own narrative and stories through this digital football world.
Embers ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐The only downside i’ve seen is that there’s nothing majorly innovative. Just a few tweaks and reworking.
