Creating backup jobs is a simple affair, and the whole thing is wizard driven so you’re never left not knowing what to do. You can use the program in regular or expert mode depending on your needs, with the later giving you access to a few extra options that will not be applicable to everyone or all circumstances.
Whichever mode you choose, you can opt to used the pre-defined “simple selection” method of selecting what to backup, or choose individual files and folders. Using “simple selection” mode, you can quickly add images, document, videos and other key types of file – including browser bookmarks – to your backup job. To make sure you never forget to keep your backups up-to-date, you can then schedule updates to take place with whatever frequency you want. This could be on a daily or weekly basis, or when events such as Windows starting or shutting down occur.
You also have options when it comes to performing full or partial backup, and you even have the choice of mixing and matching. This means you can opt to perform a partial backup on a daily basis, but go for a full backup at the weekend, for instance. Backup can be stored locally, on a network, burned to recordable media, or uploaded to an FTP server.
With advanced mode activated, you gain access to options such as file filter and settings that let you decide what to do if your computer happens to be switched off when a backup is scheduled. It also gives you the option of encrypting and password-protecting backups for security, and settings for dealing with the conditional execution of backup updates. You can also specify a list of actions to perform before or after jobs run – such as closing down apps beforehand and shutting down Windows afterwards.
A nice touch with ASCOMP BackUp Maker Professional is that not only is it easy to use, there is a handy system tray icon. From here you can activate a menu that can be used to quickly run any or all of your backup jobs in a couple of clicks. It’s a little thing, but it’s a nice touch. You can also assign keyboard shortcuts to backups so you can run them with a couple of key presses.
